A juvenile Columbian black-tailed deer, foraging in a late-summer meadow, inside of Olympic National Park, Washington.⁠
⁠
Columbian black-tailed deer are a subspecies of mule deer, and are found almost exclusively along the Pacific Coast, from northern California through Washington. This particular juvenile was likely just shy of 3 months old, given its size, spots, and the time of year it was observed. At this point in their development, they do not stray too far from their mother, learning how to forage alongside her. This includes learning where to feed, when to feed, and how long to spend eating versus scanning their environment for predators.⁠
⁠
Unlike white-tailed deer, black-tailed deer rely heavily on edge habitats, just like in this location, where a meadow is bordered by forest. This provides a prime feeding zone while also allowing a quick escape into the cover of the forest, if needed.⁠
⁠
I stumbled upon this juvenile feeding only a short distance away from its mother after a short hike inside of Olympic National Park. Their slow but methodical grazing allowed me ample time to sit down on the ground, get to an eye-level position, and engage in a relaxed photo session as they both slowly made their way through the meadow, eating plants as they went.

The lower tier of Wahkeena Falls, nestled in a narrow canyon of basalt walls, covered in a thick layer of vibrant, waterfall-fed moss.⁠
⁠
Wahkeena Falls is located within the Columbia River Gorge and is a three-tiered waterfall, falling an impressive 242 feet (74 m) in total. This photograph shows only the lower tier, which drops roughly 30 feet (9 m). The Columbia River Gorge acts as a natural corridor for moisture, with cool, damp air funneled through it, contributing to the lushness of the flora found along its walls. Additionally, the area immediately surrounding the falls functions like a mini rainforest, constantly being pummeled with mist. The combination of these factors leads to a thick layer of moss, liverworts, and lichens thriving on the canyon walls beside the falls.⁠
⁠
On this morning, I photographed a total of five waterfalls within the gorge, with this one proving to be the most difficult due to the constant barrage of mist. I had to blow water off my lens before nearly every shot, and even then, the majority of the images ended up with droplets still clinging to the glass. Fortunately, I was able to capture a select few frames completely free of water spots.

A flower-filled late-summer meadow located in the high-elevation Coconino National Forest, outside of Flagstaff, Arizona.⁠
⁠
Sitting at right around 8,000 feet (2,438 m) in elevation, this part of Arizona is much different than the desert regions the remainder of the state is known for. Humphreys Peak, in the background, stands at 12,633 feet and is Arizona’s highest point. Flagstaff itself sits at around 7,000 feet, and the ecosystems change as you approach higher and higher elevations, climbing up toward Humphreys Peak.⁠
⁠
Ponderosa pines are typically found between 6,500–8,500 feet, and aspens between 7,500–9,500 feet. The presence of both in this photograph suggests it was taken right around 8,000 feet. The broad, grassy meadows abundant with summer wildflowers are found just below subalpine levels, where monsoon moisture and snowmelt fuel the plant and animal life found here. This area is a biological overlap zone where Rocky Mountain, Great Basin, and Sonoran Desert species all coexist, making it quite unique.⁠

I spent just one day in the Flagstaff area after arriving from the Grand Canyon early that same morning. The differences between the two were felt in the temperature as well as the lushness of the plant life, resembling the Rocky Mountains more than the desert I had just departed from. While searching for a place to take a photograph toward the end of the day, this open meadow with purple lupine and yellow composites among tall grasses and weather-silvered logs served as a nice foreground for the San Francisco Peaks in the background.

Frigid water rushes down Harvard Brook, on an icy and picturesque afternoon inside White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire.⁠
⁠
Harvard Brook is a lesser-explored region of the White Mountains, but it features the impressive Georgiana and Harvard Falls, as well as miles of boulder-filled rapids along the way. The brook itself is fed by groundwater inputs, deposited there by rain and snowmelt infiltrating the soil, recharging the local groundwater system on the mountain. The darkness of the water is typical of streams in New England, colored by tannins released by decaying leaves and forest soil upstream.⁠
⁠
On a recent trip to the White Mountains, the weather varied greatly on each of the three days spent photographing. One day it was 0°F (-18°C) and clear out. Another it was 14°F (-10°C) and snowing. On this day it was hovering around 32°F (0°C) all day, with a great deal of freezing rain. While this made driving tricky and delayed the start of the day by a few hours, it led to some wonderful ice formations on all of the trees and rocks. The hike up to this point was cumbersome due to the melting, thick, sloppy snow on the ground, but the reward of ice-covered everything made it entirely worth it.

An Indian roller perches upon a hand carved fence post, on the side of a road inside Kanha National Park, India.⁠
⁠
Being an extremely colorful and exotic looking bird, one might assume the Indian roller is a rare sight to behold. But it is actually quite common to see, especially in open woodlands, fields, and roadside habitats, as was the case on this day driving through Kanha National Park. This was not my first Indian roller sighting during the trip, nor my last, but it was definitely the most opportune encounter, as it flew ahead of our vehicle, landed on this fence post, and perched long enough to take multiple photographs.⁠
⁠
They are incredibly colorful in person, but what makes their color unique is that it is not due to pigment in the feathers, but rather structural color. Pigments absorb wavelengths of light, while microscopic textures on the feathers reflect and scatter light in a way that produces shimmering iridescence and brilliant blues and greens, almost metallic looking. This phenomenon is also seen in peacocks and in certain butterflies such as the blue morpho. Because of this, their color can appear dull in poor lighting, but in a well-lit moment like this one, their striking beauty truly stands out.

A green bee-eater, living up to its name by eating a bee (and being green), inside Kanha National Park in India.⁠
⁠
Although they do primarily eat bees, wasps, and hornets, green bee-eaters also enjoy the likes of dragonflies, butterflies, moths, and beetles. Doing so is not a simple process, especially with stinging insects. They will fly in and catch their prey mid-air, return to a nearby perch, beat it against the perch to stun it, and then proceed to squeeze the abdomen to remove the venom sac and stinger. They will then enjoy the fruits (or insects) of their labor by swallowing the (now safe to do so) tasty meal.⁠
⁠
To make this process even more impressive, given their dietary needs, they typically eat around 200-300 insects per day. This increases substantially when they are chick-rearing, as they need to catch enough to feed their young. That’s a lot of abdomen-squeezing for one day and for one bird.⁠
⁠
I was lucky enough to catch this bee-eater mid-meal, after it had already engaged in its stunning and subsequent venom sac / stinger removal. Just off the side of the road in Kanha, it was close enough to the road for me to be able to capture this fascinating behavior, allowing this in-action, mid-meal shot.

Lower Latourell Falls plunges over its overhanging columnar basalt cliff, in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon.⁠
⁠
The impressive Lower Latourell Falls drops around 224 feet (68 m) and is one of the few waterfalls within the Columbia River Gorge that drops straight down from an overhanging cliff. Most of the falls in the gorge tumble to some degree, while Latourell makes minimal contact against the columnar basalt cliff walls except during extra heavy flow.⁠
⁠
The basalt columns were formed 15–17 million years ago during the Columbia River Basalt Floods, when lava flows cooled slowly enough to crack into geometric patterns. The vibrantly colored yellow patches on the cliff are golden crustose lichens, which thrive on the exposed basalt face.⁠
⁠
In order to use the flowing water of the creek as a leading line to the waterfall, I placed my tripod and camera as low to the water as I could. Given the turbulent nature of this particular spot of the creek, I was left constantly battling water droplets, needing to use my air blower nonstop on the lens right up until taking each photograph.

People arriving early in the morning to witness the spectacular Taj Mahal at sunrise in Agra, India.⁠
⁠
What might be the best time of day to view the Taj Mahal, not only in terms of crowd size, but also for the layer of mist rising from the Yamuna River, the long shadows created from the low-level sun, and of course watching the sun rise from the backside of the mausoleum as the marble walls have a cool/blue undertone, are all great reasons to arrive as soon as the Taj Mahal opens.⁠
⁠
It’s no secret that the Taj Mahal is incredible, and it’s no secret that hordes of people flock to see it every single day, upwards of 40,000 to 70,000 visitors daily. While there may seem to be a lot of people in this photograph, it pales in comparison to how many people there were when I left a couple hours later, and how many people would have been there at the peak of midday.⁠
⁠
While I was able to grab a few pictures of the Taj Mahal without any people in them, as surprising as that may sound, in this one I intentionally wanted to highlight the people coming to witness it. The Taj is both a local pilgrimage site and a global destination, so a large element of the story of visiting this impressive structure is seeing it alongside the tens of thousands of others who came to experience the same thing.

Three tiger cubs emerge from the forest, deep inside Kanha National Park, in Madhya Pradesh, India.⁠
⁠
Being one of India’s oldest and largest tiger reserves, Kanha covers over 360 square miles (940 sq km) of protected sal forests, bamboo thickets, and meadows, and was the primary inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book.”⁠
⁠
With all of the less-than-optimistic conservation and environmental news in the world, India’s efforts to restore their tiger populations is one of the few wins we can celebrate. Kanha became a wildlife sanctuary in the 1930s, a national park in 1955, and was brought under a dedicated Tiger Reserve management framework in 1973 as one of the original nine Project Tiger sites. This led to strictly protected zoning in the core of Kanha, surrounded by mixed-use buffer zones to help protect the inner areas from being right up against residential villages.⁠
⁠
Beginning in the 1960s, over 37 villages were moved out of the protected core zone, setting the stage for the immense tiger habitat that exists there today. Kanha is often cited as one of the clearest examples showing how core area resettlement can translate into higher prey densities and stable tiger populations down the road. This habitat management is what directly led to Kanha having a very high concentration of the animals tigers prey upon: deer, antelope, gaur, and others.⁠
⁠
While driving through the jungle roads inside Kanha, we were made aware by a park ranger of these three sleeping cubs. Parking at a respectable distance, we waited, and then waited a bit longer, for them to eventually wake up. After over an hour passed, some movement could be seen. The three cubs emerged, crossing the road, allowing a handful of seconds to both enjoy the amazing sight and capture this moment.
