A male sambar deer in pursuit of a mate, in the forest of Kanha National Park, India.⁠

Native to much of southwest Asia, sambar deer can be found in both dry deciduous forests as well as rainforests and mixed. They are usually found in areas which are in close proximity to bodies of water, spending much of their time eating grasses, leaves, fruits, as well as other plant matter. The males are polygynous, mating with multiple females. When they are attempting to breed, they will take a few steps to make themselves appear larger in size and darker in color, increasing their odds of success. One way is that their necks will actually swell up in size, giving them a bigger appearance, but they will also roll around in the mud, coating their body and antlers in it. The mud-covered antlers contribute to their larger look, and the mud all over their body leads to their dark color.⁠

Which is exactly what happened in this situation. As we were making our way though Kanha National Park, in Madhya Pradesh, there was a group of sambar deer standing in an open area. A very large male was laying down in the mud, rolling around, which was more than enough of an attraction for us to stop and observe this behavior. It was after a few minutes of rolling around that he finally emerged, covered in mud, with one thing on his mind, finding a mate. With his neck noticeably larger in size, he headed immediately towards the female in this photo, seeing if she would succumb to his advances. Luckily for him, she did. Happy to witness this moment, we continued deeper into the forest, letting them have their privacy.⁠

Looking into the rather extravagant Art Deco elevator bank, inside the historic Palmer House Hotel, in downtown Chicago.⁠
⁠
The Palmer House Chicago opened up back in 1870, only to have to rebuild itself shortly thereafter, after it burned down in the Great Chicago Fire, in 1871. Then, after successfully running for over 50 years, they decided to completely tear it down and rebuild again, in 1923, to accommodate a higher number of guests. The 1920s were the height of the Art Deco era, and the architecture and interior design of this newly constructed hotel at the time completely reflected that, to an extremely ornate level of detail and quality. In addition to the very impressive main lobby at the hotel, the nearby elevator banks were almost as beautiful and mesmerizing. It would make sense for them to showcase their elevators, as they were actually the first hotel in Chicago to feature an elevator, all the way back in the 19th century.⁠

I spent about an hour walking through this hotel, as part of a larger walking exploration around downtown Chicago, photographing the sites as I went. Being a member of the Historic Hotels of America, many visitors come to tour the hotel’s lobby and surrounding corridors, and see what it was like to live the high life during 1920’s Chicago. Entering the doors of this hotel is like passing though a time machine, allowing you to experience the exquisite Art Deco design, at its most luxurious.⁠

A northern tufted flycatcher perched on a branch, deep inside one of the cloud forests found in Monteverde, Costa Rica.⁠
⁠
This species of flycatcher is found all the way from northwestern Mexico down to Ecuador, existing in the higher-altitude mountains within this range. They can be found between 2,300 feet (700 m) and 11,500 feet (3,500 m) altitude, but are most commonly found between 4,000 to 7,000 feet, like this individual was spotted, inside of the Santa Elena Cloud Forest, at around 5,250 feet. Like most flycatchers, they are quite small, at about 5 inches (13 cm) long, and they will often perch on an open branch, waiting for some insects to pass by, flying after them, catching them mid-flight. They are quite colorful, with an orange-colored breast and bright yellow belly, with both the males and females sharing this color pattern and look.⁠
⁠
This particular sub-species of tufted flycatcher is actually quite under-studied, so not much is known about their specific behaviors or biology, but hopefully this is better studied and documented in the future. One behavior that is known, and I can confirm because I witnessed this myself, is the tendency to land on one perch, quicky fly away, to only return to that same perch over and over again. This is exactly what happened, as we were hiking through the absolutely beautiful Santa Elena Cloud Forest. This bird was landing on this perch, about 20 feet off the side of the trail, pausing for maybe 10 or 20 seconds, flying off, to only return and repeat. I much appreciated this behavior, as it allowed me to comfortably take its photograph, knowing that if it took off, odds are it would be right back to that exact spot in no time.⁠

A female wood duck stands on top of a plant-packed log, in the middle of a large beaver pond, in Massachusetts.⁠ ⁠ A common species of duck found across much of North America, wood ducks prefer smaller and vegetation-filled bodies of water versus wider and open ponds and lakes. Streams, swamps, and overgrown beaver ponds (such as this exact one), are the ideal environments woods ducks look for. They spend much of their day floating or standing amongst the vegetation, or on top of the branches or logs along the shore, eating a variety of plant matter, seeds and nuts. Since they often perch in trees, wood ducks have rather sharp claws to help them do so, an adaptation most other duck species don’t have. When considering the species, most people think of the fancier looking male wood duck, and rightfully so. But, although the females may not be considered as beautiful, their distinctive white eye-ring and unique profile is still an eye-catching look, and a beautiful duck, nonetheless.⁠ ⁠ This picture was taken last year, on a beaver pond close to where I live which I visit throughout the year, capturing the wildlife that inhabits it in the process. I usually go there for 2 to 3 hours at a time, and on top of the large family of beavers, the other species present in this pond are numerous. In addition to this wood duck, on this 2 hour visit alone I also saw the beavers, a kingfisher, flycatchers, a green heron and a blue heron, plus the usual frog and turtle suspects. The sun setting besides the Taj Mahal, on the Yamuna River, in Agra, India.⁠ ⁠ Coming from both a traveler’s perspective, and that of a photographer, I definitely wanted to make sure I properly explored and photographed the Taj Mahal during my recent trip to India, and I wanted to do so from a variety of different perspectives. We’ve all seen the postcard picture that everyone takes in front of the pools leading to the Taj Mahal, and I certainly took that same photo while I was there as well. But I really wanted to make an effort to go to, and photograph from, unique vantage points that most don’t get to see, surrounding this magnificent monument. There were at least a dozen different spots I tried around Agra, and if you watch my ‘India’ story highlight in my profile, you can see behind-the-scenes clips from some of these locations. I will share many of the alternate Taj Mahal photos, in the future.⁠ ⁠ With only two days in Agra, I had to have a solid plan to make sure I could see as much as possible, including the other monuments besides the Taj. As I always do, I wanted to find the best locations for taking a picture at sunrise and sunset, and after looking at the map of Agra, I knew incorporating this river at sunset would only lead to good results. Through some local connections, I heard of this old monument which is both quite difficult to find, but also to gain entry to. But its location seemed to offer a magically picturesque opportunity to watch the sun setting behind the Taj Mahal, on the river. A bull moose endlessly munching on some of the aquatic plants growing inside of the Sheep Lakes, in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.⁠

Of the seven moose I saw during my trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, four of them happened to be standing inside of lakes, consuming an abundance of aquatic plants, just after sunrise. Which is no surprise, as the plants found inside these bodies of water are high in the sodium that these moose need to live. Moose have a diet, that much of the year consists of the leaves and twigs of a variety of trees found in these mountains. While these sources of food are common in the Rocky Mountains all year round, they do not provide enough of the sodium that moose need. Which is exactly why they seek out the sodium-rich plants growing in these mountain lakes, which are only available in the warmer months. So, during the months when these plants are accessible, you better believe that they are stocking up on as much sodium-packed food as possible.⁠

This very large bull moose, along with another big bull, emerged from the woods besides the Sheep Lakes, just before sunrise one summer morning inside of Rocky Mountain National Park. I woke up early this morning, and headed to these lakes, as I knew that their water and food sources attract a wide variety of wildlife, especially right around sunrise. These two moose did not disappoint, as they slowly made their way across a large field, entering the water, where they remained for the better part of an hour, slowly dunking their heads underwater, emerging with a mouthful of water and plants, chewing the plants up as the lake water poured out of their mouth. After filling up, they exited the water just as they entered, as a pair, heading off back into the woods, going about their day.⁠

An Indian peacock, perched on a dead tree, in the forest of Kanha National Park, In Madhya Pradesh, India.⁠

Indian peafowls, referred to as peacocks when male and peahens when female, are native to India and Sri Lanka, with India actually designating it as their national bird. They are widespread across India, found in many of the environments below 6000 feet (1800 m) elevation. While they do have a preference for deciduous forests around water sources, they are also found in grasslands, shrublands, and what I was most surprised to see, villages and cities. I was certainly aware that I would be seeing this beautiful bird during my trip in India, I just wasn’t expecting how common wild peafowls actually were across the country, and how many I would get to see during my journey.⁠
⁠
This peacock was one of so many that I was able to photograph, and I will certainly share more in the future, including some where the males are displaying their feathers in an attempt to impress a mate. And I can confirm, that it is in fact quite sad to watch a peacock proudly display his plumage while dancing, to only watch the female turn and walk away, while he slowly lowers his feathers in rejection. Despite what it looks like, these long feathers that they display are not actually their tail feathers, but originate from their back. When they go to display their feathers to court a peahen, they use their short and stiff tailfeathers to prop up their train of display feathers, forming the large fan they are known for. Despite how surprisingly common they are, and how seeing them became commonplace at a certain point, how strikingly beautiful they are in person never grew old, and I fully appreciated every opportunity I had to see them, in the wild.⁠

A short banded sailer butterfly resting on a fallen leaf, on the floor of the deciduous forest just outside Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India.⁠

Short banded sailers are quite common within their range, which extends across much of southeast Asia, including most of India, where this one was spotted. Short banded sailers are a species of nymphalid butterflies, which are the largest family of butterflies in the world. Nymphalids come in a variety of patterns, with a striped pattern similar to this one, being a common one. Not only is this species found widely across India and southern Asia, it can be found in a variety of habitats, from forests, to fields, and even urban areas.⁠
⁠
This one was seen in the forest just outside of Kanha National Park, in central India. I had spent the previous 3 days navigating within the park itself, photographing and seeing a wide range of amazing animals. The flight to my next destination was early in the afternoon on this particular day, so while I did not have time to go into the national park itself this morning, I did have time for a quick nature walk in the woods, before heading to the airport. This gave me an opportunity to focus on some of the smaller animals that I would not normally be able to photograph, from the back of a safari vehicle. This section of woods had a surprising abundance of smaller butterflies, often temporarily settling on the leaves below, before resuming their flight activity. The walk was brief, but I was able to see (and photograph) at least 6 different species of butterflies during it, including this short banded sailer, showing a bit of wing wear and tear.⁠

A white-tailed deer transitioning from its winter coat to summer, as the springtime leaves begin to sprout on the trees, in Massachusetts.⁠

In order to better protect them in the range of weather experienced in the environments they live in, white-tailed deer have both a winter and summer coat, offering protection in different ways. To be able to survive harsh winters, their winter coat is comprised of two different layers, both insulating. The outer guard hairs are actually hollow, with trapped air on the inside, which act as an extremely effective insulation material. This outer layer of fur is 2 inches longer than the undercoat. The under layer is very dense and soft, providing heavy insulation to get through even the coldest of winters. Between this very dense undercoat, and the protective and hollow outer layer, the result is an extremely effective winter barrier. They sport their winter coat from around September to April, transitioning to a much shorter, pale brown and red layer, as their summer coat. The color of this thin layer of fur reflects the sun’s energy, keeping them much cooler during hot summer days.⁠

As spring is in full swing here in Massachusetts, I am getting outside as often as I can, both for photography but also the endless benefits of being out in nature. Last week, as I was walking in the woods close to where I live, I came across this deer as I turned the corner, standing just off to the side of the trail. I very slowly sat down on the ground, making myself less threatening while keeping a healthy distance, and observed for about a minute, before it headed off into the woods, both of us parting ways.⁠
