A gaur calf chases after mom, in the heart of the jungle inside Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India.⁠
⁠
Gaurs, also known as an Indian bison, are the largest and tallest of all the members in the wild cattle family, even larger than the North American bison, and the African water buffalo. Being such massive creatures, adult males will range from 1,300 to 3,300 lbs (600 to 1,500 kg), with females weighing between 1,000 to 2,000 lbs (450 to 1,000 kg). Due to their enormity, besides humans, they really do not have any realistic threat of predators in their environment. There are some cases where tigers have managed to take down adult gaurs, and some situations where crocodile and gaur habitats overlap, leading to attacks, but overall, they are rarely preyed upon by others.⁠
⁠
But, even in cases where animals are down-right massive, they are not massive during every stage of their life. Gaur calves are not avoided by predators in the same way adults are, as they are still small enough to be taken down by animals such as tigers, leopards, and wild dogs. Which, is where the average gaur herd size of around 30 members comes into play. The adults of the herd will surround the calves, forming a circle, forcing any would-be predator to have to break through an almost impenetrable fortress of solid gaur. ⁠

As they grow in size, calves are weaned off around 7 to 12 months old, leaving the necessary protection of their elders. But, for the time being, the calf I saw this morning inside of Pench National Park was in no rush to separate from mom, quickly catching up to her once noticing they had become semi-separated.⁠

The different colored mountains showcasing the diverse geological landscape within Red Rock Canyon, Nevada.⁠

Covering 195,812 acres inside of the Mojave Desert, the Red Rock National Conservation Area is an incredible region filled with amazing scenery, further accentuated by the brightly colored mountains and rocks found within it. The sandstone present here arrived about 300 million years ago, when sand and gravel was transported by water flowing down from the ancestral Rocky Mountains, eventually becoming sand dunes. These dunes compacted and cemented over time; a process known as lithification. Over the following hundreds of millions of years, this area was at the bottom of the sea, with the resulting salt water leaving deposits in the Earth’s crust. Being on the Keystone Thrust Fault, this area experienced high tectonic shifts over time, resulting in crust fragmentation. This led to certain areas of sandstone having higher deposits of salt than others. Due to these intermittent salt deposits, the iron in the sand oxidized more than areas without this salt, leading to the patches of strong red color found in some areas of sandstone, but not others.⁠
⁠
This picture was taken while hiking through the Kraft Mountain Loop, which is a challenging trail covering about 3.6 miles (5.8 km) of desert, with a fair amount of rock scrambling and canyon sections throughout it. In an area located only about 30 minutes from Las Vegas, it is quite surprisingly how secluded and wild it feels here, and how many good hiking trails exist.⁠

A Canada jay perches atop one of the wind-whipped trees on the summit of Mount Hight, as the sun rises one frigid morning atop Mount Hight, in the White Mountains, New Hampshire.⁠

Canada jays are found across most of Canada, with their range trickling down into parts of the northern United States, including northern New Hampshire, where this one was seen in the White Mountains. They do not migrate, staying in their ranges year-round. They prefer forests, especially those at higher altitudes, living in both mixed and coniferous forests. Although they can be found amongst a variety of trees, they are rarely seen in areas without spruce trees. They go after a variety of foods, from small birds and rodents, to insects, and plant matter such as berries and seeds. They will even help themselves to the carcasses of kills left behind by larger predators, especially in the winter when other food sources are scarce. They will spend much of their summer creating various food caches that they will turn to and survive off of during periods of extreme weather over the winter.⁠
⁠
If high elevation spruce-covered mountains are what Canada jays look for, it makes total sense that I saw one on this morning, when photographing the sunrise from the summit. Two weeks ago, I posted the picture I took of the sunrise, but shortly thereafter, this Canada jay landed about 20 feet away from me, on the very top of the summit. With the recently sun-risen horizon still a vibrant orange, and the branch it was perched on being on the edge of wide-openness, I quicky changed out my landscape lens, putting on my telephoto and taking a few pics before abruptly flying away. Even though I would have liked more time to take a few more photos, I was happy to get the shot I did, before parting ways.⁠

A bull moose walks amongst the short trees growing along the edge of the river and the forest, inside of Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.⁠

When not wading in ponds and eating aquatic plants, moose forage on land for a variety of trees, seeking out willow, aspen, birch, and others. Since they eat the leaves, twigs and buds of these trees, younger trees provide the easiest access to these features, due to their small branches being so low to the ground. Younger twigs are also more tender, thus easier to chew, and pack a higher nutritional content than more mature branches. So, if you are a moose looking to stock up on nutrition, finding new growth trees are your best bet.⁠
⁠
Riparian zones are areas along the edges of rivers, streams, or other bodies of water, and are a transition space between the water and land. Due to the water saturated ground, and the richness of the soil in this area, a great diversity of plants are able to grow, proving moose with a greater number of younger trees. These zones also provide the moose with hiding places to shelter from both predators and the weather, but also give them enough open space to travel efficiently. Basically, what it all boils down to is that if you are hoping to spot a moose in the wild, going to a riparian zone around dawn or dusk will be a wise choice. Which, was exactly the case during this fortunate encounter, shortly before the sun set on this evening inside of Grand Teton National Park.⁠

A landspout tornado and the storm it connected with, over some farmland, near Hawk Springs, Wyoming.⁠ ⁠ Continuing on my previous post, this wider shot of the same landspout tornado near Hawk Springs, Wyoming, shows its scale with the storm it connected to. Landspout tornados are different, in that they form from the ground up, as opposed to your traditional mesocyclonic tornado forming at the cloud base, then extending down to the ground.⁠ ⁠ Landspout tornados do not form from a mesocyclone, but typically occur along a weather boundary where air converges at the surface, forcing it upwards. This updraft then encounters something, such as crosswinds, causing it to rotate. This is the same principal as a dust devil, but the difference being that this grows to such a size where it connects with the updrafts of the clouds above, becoming a tornado. They are usually quite short in duration (under 15 minutes), and have only ever reached recorded damage levels of EF3, but they can be damaging nonetheless.⁠ ⁠ The ‘Storm chasing’ story highlight reel on my profile page has footage towards the end of it which shows what it was like driving through the hail core of the storm this day, as well as a variety of other clips from this storm and others, during my week with @stormchasingtour. A landspout tornado briefly forms over one of the many sprawling farm fields, near Hawk Springs, Wyoming.⁠

Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to go out storm chasing for a full week with @stormchasingtour, with every day dedicated to pursuing and documenting extreme weather. Every storm within driving distance in the United States was considered each day, when choosing which storms to pursue. While no one “wants” tornados, especially if it causes destruction or loss of life, we definitely set out each day with the intention of hoping to find some, focusing on isolated supercells which had the highest probability of encountering favorable conditions for tornados to form.⁠
⁠
As the week progressed and we continued to see and photograph incredibly powerful and amazingly beautiful storms, the absence of tornados was something that left all of us feeling not quite fully satisfied. Then it was on the final day of the tour, where the best forecast for seeing a tornado led us into Wyoming, a state filled with incredible landscapes but notorious for not producing many tornados. But, as we headed closer to the storm, we could see a dust cloud rising from the ground in the distance, with a funnel reaching up and connecting to the storm clouds above, forming the less-commonly seen, landspout tornado.⁠

Looking down at the Las Vegas Strip, from up on the observation deck of the replica Eiffel Tower.⁠

Being roughly 4.5-miles (7.2 km) long, the Las Vegas Strip is home to what seems like endless numbers of hotels and casinos, each of them vying to outdo each other in terms of theme and opulence. One of the more visually eye-catching hotels on the Strip is the Paris Las Vegas, with its 540 ft (160 m) tall, half-scale Eiffel Tower replica. With it, comes a 460 ft (140 m) observation deck, providing 360-degree views of the Strip and the surrounding areas. Which, is exactly where I took this photo from.⁠
⁠
Las Vegas is definitely one of those places that looks significantly better at night, than during the day. And, as with any city, seeing it from above provides a unique perspective and a broader appreciation of its scale. Which was definitely the case from this observation platform, and was probably my favorite view of the Strip I experienced.⁠

A Steller’s jay perched on the branch of a dead tree, in the montane forest of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.⁠
⁠
Primarily found in coniferous and mixed forests, the Steller’s jay’s range starts all the way in southern Alaska, and extends down the western side of North America, continuing through Mexico, Central America, and as far south as Nicaragua. They are ground foragers, seeking out insects, berries, seeds, small animals, eggs and more. Even though they are pretty stellar (with an a), they are actually named after a German naturalist and explorer who documented the bird during one of his expeditions into Alaska in the 1700s. This naming after a man with the last name Steller (with an e), gives the Steller’s jay the likely title of being the most misspelled bird species.⁠
⁠
They are highly vocal birds, utilizing a variety of loud calls and songs. In addition to their impressive singing, their ability to mimic the sounds of other birds and animals is their real vocal strength. While being able to do dead-on impressions of other birds may sound like a good party trick in the bird world, the reason for this skill is actually to scare away other animals. Whether it is to deter competitors who may want to cut into their food resources, or predators who may try to eat them, their impressive catalog of animal mimicry serves them quite well.⁠

Watching the sun rise from the top of Mount Hight, during autumn in the White Mountains, New Hampshire.⁠

I took this photograph three days ago, from the 4,675’ summit of Mount Hight, which is part of the Carter-Moriah Range of the White Mountains. In order to get there for sunrise, it involved hiking up 3.8 miles and gaining 2,000’ of elevation, to the Carter Notch Hut Saturday night, which is one of the eight backcountry huts run by the Appalachian Mountain Club, located along the Appalachian Trail. After sleeping in one of the bunks of this dormitory-style bunkhouse, the hike at 3AM to reach the summit involved a very steep additional 2 miles, ascending 1,500’, arriving above the tree line prior to the sun starting to show itself.⁠

Even though the fall foliage still hanging on in the distance implied autumn, the conditions felt on this summit were most certainly those of winter. With the Mount Washington Observatory putting out a forecast of temperatures around 25°F (-4°C), and with 60 mph (97 km/h) winds taking it down to a wind chill around 0°F (-18°C) this morning, setting up and waiting for the sun to rise did not come without its challenges. As it became lighter, it was evident the entire sky was completely covered in clouds, but luckily with the exception of a small gap along the entire horizon. This left a small window for the sun to briefly pass through, before disappearing behind the overcast sky.⁠

Watching the sun rise from the top of Mount Hight, during autumn in the White Mountains, New Hampshire.⁠ ⁠ I took this photograph three days ago, from the 4,675’ summit of Mount Hight, which is part of the Carter-Moriah Range of the White Mountains.
